communication is like a box of chocolates ...
. Apparently I offended a new group member Monday ... He sent me a PM about something I see as valuable for other people to know about, and it was also the sort of PM that would cause some people to automatically block him, the sender, or maybe send a "not-so-polite" message in return. This man, according to his home page, has been a network member for a few years, so I made an assumption he was (is) "in the know" about certain things and sent him a polite welcome suggesting how he could contribute his information "so it does not come off as a sales pitch" and reminding him that his first post is more of an introduction for himself than anything else. His response was that he felt he was "being squeezed into a mold" So of course I let him know that was not my intention - especially not in the context of our group - reminding him I thought what he had to offer was valuable and hoped to see it presented to the group - "as long as it does not appear to be an advertisement" To that he replied he "must not understand" what the network is about. I still remember years ago wanting to tell other people about something that had an immediate benefit to me - people I did not know, who did not know me, new to the "group" ... and noticing how other people who did that sort of thing met a "virtual wall of silence" - if they were lucky enough to not be flamed into submission. Someone who had just joined the network within the last month or two I could understand being in such a position. The whole "Internet marketing scene" for many people seems to be a "catch-as-catch-can" affair, for which people tend to leave more often than not, give up, opt out. There is a real investment of time and practice to gain "success" on the Internet - "success" being something quite personal - and there is "quick disappointment" for those who come in knowing how the Internet is "advertised" on radio and television, and I do not yet know of any "fast" way of explaining that to anyone. Communication is "like a box of chocolates" as FG might say ... You never know how you are going to be misread. .
