"Midwesterners in the "heart of America" still value the importance of self-reliance," according to Rush Limbaugh, "suggesting" there are "others" who do not, though Mr. L makes it quite clear who those "others" are. According to the most recent data available Census Bureau's American Community Surveys (2006), 2400 Linn County Iowa households received cash public assistance, out of 85,000 total households - 2.8 percent of all Linn County households receive cash welfare. Prior to Katrina, contrary to popular belief, only 2.6 percent of households received cash welfare - 4600 households out of 180,000. A slightly higher percentage of people in Linn County received federal assistance in 2006 than New Orleanians in 2004. In Black Hawk County, Iowa, damaged by recent flooding, 2.5 percent of all households receive cash assistance - an insignificant difference between mostly white, rural Iowans and the mostly black, urban New Orleans residents who faced Katrina. Worse yet, Linn County recipients are paid $3200 annually, and those in Black Hawk County get more than $4600, while the average annual amount of cash assistance received in New Orleans prior to Katrina was only $2800. We need to hold Mr. Limbaugh accountable for his lies and distortions, reign him in unless he will tell the truth, because he is doing more to divide Americans against themselves than just about anyone else alive today.
