a bit of grumbling at work ...
. Tuesday there was a bit of grumbling about how one of our older (81) volunteers overstocks our shelves. These are loving people - Ben (82) and Jeanie (78) who have their moments, as we all do - not so much complaining as seeking how to improve a situation. I would not have commented at all, except that Ben asked me what I would say to Dean. "What I would say," I began almost automatically ... Pausing, then shifting slightly, I asked Ben, "Remember not too long ago you mentioned being, feeling, needed?" That got both of them thinking a bit differently about Dean's contributions to our work. Dean has a pickup and a trailer he uses to haul in a good portion of our food every Monday morning, and sometimes he unloads it by himself, alone, for which I have been asked to accompany him sometimes, like when there is a 100-pound bag of rice for instance ... ... so he busies himself a while putting away some of the "haul" and on Tuesdays he makes one of the bread runs to local stores. I do not mind the heavy lifting, and as much as I try to do that lifting and carrying on Tuesdays, I also try to stay conscious of the fact that others there DO need to *feel needed* and to not deprive them of the pleasure of doing "their" work. Ben told me later that he thought I had developed a "very good philosopy" - and I thanked him for that. We need to remember to thank those around us for what they do, what they contribute in their own unique ways - voluntarily - not because they have to. Remind people we care about, and strangers too, how needed they are. . |
